Grilled Cheese Rolls

Lisa @ onceamonthmeals.com

  • 12 slices whole wheat bread
  • 12 slices american cheese
  • 4 Tablespoons butter
  • 6 Tablespoons cream cheese, softened

Using a cutting board and a bread knife, cut off the crusts of each slice of bread.  (Don’t throw them away – save them to make homemade bread crumbs!) Flatten each of the bread squares using a rolling pin.  Spread 1/2 tablespoon of cream cheese on each bread square, following by a slice of cheese.  Roll up bread, pressing tightly while rolling.  In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat.  Place rolls seam side down in skillet and cook for approximately 5 minutes, rolling so that each side has browned and cheese is melted.  Transfer to a paper towel lined cooking rack.  Cool slightly before serving.

Freezing Directions:

Follow directions above.  Cool completely.  Transfer to a baking sheet and flash freeze. After frozen, transfer to quart size freezer storage bag.  Label and freeze.  TO SERVE:  Remove desired number of rolls from bag.  Reheat in microwave, oven or skillet until heated through.

Servings: 12 rolls

Oooh! I love this idea. Would mozzarella work for dipping into spaghetti sauce?

  6. Kirsten says:

These were a hit in my house. My 3 year old did all the prep with a little help and then I fried them.
We cut them into ‘sushi’ and he ate them with chopsticks lol

excuse me…whats american cheese? is it like kraft singles? or just regular cheddar cheese?

  8. Ashlee says:

This was a disaster for me! Way too much butter to fry them in and the cheese melted out and they burnt so I tossed them out. Any tips?

Wow – I am not sure what happened! Next time maybe cut down on the butter, frying just until they turn golden brown so the chueese doesn’t melt out!

  9. Anita says:

Loved this recipe!!!! My two year old ate three of them. The only thing I would change, is not use such cheap bread. It fell apart.

  10. Barb says:

Could you butter the bread on the outside and bake them in the oven?

    • Lisa says:

You could certainly try that. My suggestion would be some kind of a weight to ensure they don’t unroll when they are baking. A oven proof glass baking dish will work great! Let us know how they turn out!
