Homemade Italian Dressing Mix

As the holiday season draws near, many of us are probably looking for ways to impress our guests. You want to know one way to bring the “wow” factor to your holiday meal and only spend a few minutes in the kitchen? Make your own salad dressing! You can even make a big batch, wrap them in pretty baggies or jars, and send them home with your guests. If you want to spend a little extra money and give a foodie friend an awesome gift, pack it in a basket with high quality oil, vinegar, and/or salad tools (i.e. salad bowl, lettuce spinner, or salad tongs).

Finally, there are many “throw and go” recipes that call for prepared dressing or dressing mix. Having this mix on hand will help you get some delicious but easy meals on the table during this busy season in between celebrations. Here are some OAMM recipes from the archives that have Italian Dressing Mix as an ingredient:

  • 1 Tablespoon garlic salt

Make up bags for your pantry or dress them up a little and give them as gifts. Great use for an abundance of dried herbs from the garden.

  • 1 Tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 Tablespoons oregano
  • 1 Tablespoon dried parsley flakes
  • salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.25 teaspoon thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon celery seed
  • pinch sugar (optional)

Mix together ingredients and store in an airtight container; or use in recipes as directed.

To mix into Italian Dressing, whisk or shake together one recipe mix with 1/4 cup vinegar (white or red/white wine vinegar work well), 2 Tablespoons water, and 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil.

Servings: equivalent to one package of mix (about 1 cup dressing when prepared as directed)
