Sliced & Diced: Breadcrumbs

Sliced & Diced from Once A Month Meals I was hit in the head with the need for this post when I had a ton of leftover buns from our son’s 2nd birthday party. I am not a fan of frozen bread. I know many of you do it and perhaps even swear by it, but it just isn’t for me. However, I have seen several posts about how others use their food processors to grind up the bread or day old bread into breadcrumbs for later use. You can then freeze that in a freezer bag and store them for later.

If you are wanting to use less processed foods in your diet and more of your own homemade goods, making your own breadcrumbs is most definitely an option as well. But how many cups of breadcrumbs can you expect to yield from the average size loaf of bread, hamburger buns, or hot dog buns? Good question!

I went to work on my bread to come up with some answers for you. Here are my results:

So next time you go to the pantry and are without the needed breadcrumbs or you have some bread a little past its prime, you know what to do and how much you are going to need!

    Does the bread need to be a little dry to grind up or can you grind it up while it is still soft?

    I wonder how well this would keep in jars that have been vacuum-sealed…

    Guess the bread would have to be very, very dry….

  4. Oh, I am the queen of this! I usually throw bread in the freezer, then when I have enough I mass-produce. I like to dry it in the oven before food-processing. The other thing that’s a nice topping for casseroles is to cut your bread into cubes and sautee it in a little bit of melted butter, then put on top of your casserole and bake.

    Did this myself recently to avoid throwing away some buns. Used some to bread my chicken for Sunday lunch and they were perfect right out of the freezer. Great money saver and better than store bought. Tip- I sprayed the buns with butter flavored pam and toasted in the oven.
