Sweet and Sour Grapefruit Smoothie

Have you ever though you didn’t like a certain food only to discover later that if it is prepared well, it is delicious and you love it? Grapefruit is one of those foods for me. I kept purchasing them from my co-op and trying to make myself enjoy them plain, but they were just too sour! Then I had a friend suggest mixing them in a smoothie with other fruits to lend some sweetness. I’m so thankful, because I’ve finally found a way to get all the nutrition out of a grapefruit and into my body without my face being scrunched into that hilarious sour face. So if you think you don’t like grapefruit, give this smoothie a try. If you still find it too sour, you could take the edge off by adding honey to taste or a little more orange juice.

Sweet and Sour Grapefruit Smoothie

  • 1 medium grapefruit, peeled and deseeded
  • 1 medium apple, cored
  • 2 medium kiwifruit, peeled
  • 1 medium banana, peeled
  • 4 ounces orange juice
  • 1 Tablespoon flax seeds


Place all ingredients into a blender and process until smooth.

Freezing Directions:

Blend as directed above, portion into quart sized freezer bags, label, and lay flat to freeze. TO SERVE: Thaw in refrigerator overnight, pour into a cup and enjoy.
