Things I Love Thursday: Summer Infant Baby Gate

Disclosure: Summer Infant provided me with a a baby gate to review. All the opinions in this post are mine. As mentioned below, I am the one that contacted them!

I love my house and most of the set-up. However, I bought it before I ever dreamed there would be children in my life. At that time, it was just a dream that I would ever be married. Now we have two kids and to say that we have a few challenges would be an understatement. One of those challenges is the expanse between my kitchen and living room.

It is 84 inches wide. Have you ever had to look for a larger than normal baby gate? They hardly exist. At least one that is flexible in it’s width. And I can tell you on one hand the number I have ever seen in all of my research. And I have done some research.

I looked when Isaac was a baby over a year ago. Nothing. So we just let it go. I let him come in the kitchen, explore my cupboards and was extra careful when he got near the stove. But it still made me super nervous.

Then there is Tessa. Dear sweet Tessa. That girl is a gymnast in the making. She is able to do things that I don’t think 7 month old children should be capable of. And the doctor warned us at her 6 month appointment that she was likely going to be a kid that gets into EVERYTHING.

So I have been sitting around wondering what it was going to be like to have a toddler hanging from my knees and a baby underfoot as I cooked. Then I saw it. On a Babies R Us shelf. The answer. The ONE I had been looking for all this time! The Summer Infant Sure & Secure Custom Fit Gate. And to find out it was a Summer Infant product sent me over the moon!

Why? Because you will recall that the video monitor we have is also a Summer Infant product that I love so well. So, like any savvy blogger would do, I contacted them again to see if they would be interested in having me do a baby gate review! I was so excited when they said, of course!

I installed the gate with BOTH kids awake and NO HUSBAND around. That is how easy it was. It is mounted into the wall but it was fairly easy to do. Well, I did have a few trying moments but that had more to do with my abilities to use the drill and less with the gate.

It turned out that I only needed to use 2 of the three panels that were given. It will stretch that wide! It is amazing! It will extend up to 144 inches! It has leg stands as well so it really is stable. I love, love, love the gate. That is one of the reasons this gate works so well in this area. We can still come and go as we please. Yet, I can keep little feet and hands safe when I need to.

I also want to mention that it is extremely durable and flexible. The hinges are made such that it will bend in different directions for different formations. You can even put two of these gates together to make a play pen area or to gate in a corner of the room. I am thinking this is going to be a HUGE help with an almost walking toddler come time to put up a Christmas tree. The other benefit to the flexible hinges is that when my son hangs from it kicks it lunges at it pulls on it shakes it, it doesn’t come unhinged from the wall. That is a huge plus!

The only thing that I think could be improved on this gate is the door latching technique and system. It isn’t hard but you have to be rather precise with it and sometimes I am in a bit of a hurry. Considering all of the other features and perks that it brings me, I can definitely overlook that small annoyance.

I am so, so glad to have time in the kitchen and to know my little ones are safe from harms way. Well, that is if I could keep Tessa from eating Isaac’s plastic dinosaurs. *sigh*

Living in a split-level house with a wrought iron railing is a very tricky endeavor with an 18-month old! I would use this fabulously long gate to block the stairs AND the iron railing that is wide enough for her to get her head stuck. Thanks for the offer – I really hope I’m chosen!

  2. Rebekah says:

Oh I REALLY hope I win! I have the same problem with my kitchen and my 9.5 month old baby JUST started walking. Like last night! She took her first steps LAST NIGH!!! AHHH!!! :)

  3. kristen says:

I’d use this to block off the hallway going to our garage door, basement door, etc!

  4. Michelle Carter says:

I have a baby boy that is just starting to get into everything as well. He’s a climber and could go up, up, up for days…but he can’t figure out how to get down yet. We live in a basement apartment so I’d put this on the stairs that lead upstairs so he can’t get away when I’m busy cooking dinner, cleaning, etc. Looks like a great product!

  5. Michelle Carter says:

    I facebooked about this giveaway.

  6. carriem says:

I could really use this, I have a crazy almost 2 year old and one due next month, so security for my toddler is very urgent!

  7. Kathryn says:

We are currently living in my in-laws’ basement because we are broke, and little one keeps climbing the stairs when my back is turned. We have it blocked with a kitchen chair turned on its side, which is rather inconvenient, so I’d love to win!

  8. Donna S. says:

we NEED this gate. We have a large opening that we can’t find a gate to fit… until now! This gate looks great. Our 20 month old is notorious for running a-muck in our house causing all kinds of fun. We currently have a large ottoman turned on it’s side to block off our dining room. I’d love to be able to put my feet up again! Thanks for offering a great giveaway!

  9. Natalie H. says:

I just had my fourth baby and the gate we have is not long enough to reach across the bottom of our stairs. I’d love to have a gate that actually works before he starts crawling around!

  10. Jen says:

this is just what I have been looking for… our Dr said the same thing about our son – he will get into everything and he does! we have a wide opening between our dining and living room and I can not find a gate wide enough…

  11. Danyelle says:

We need a gate to keep our eleven month old from going upstairs until she can figure out how to come downstairs safely. One that would allow the four year old passage too would be awesome.

  12. Blakely says:

I have a 14 month old who went from sitting still to almost running in a matter of weeks. I need all the help I can get to keep her where she belongs!!

  13. Amy says:

We are in need of a large baby gate as well! I just bought one at Babies R Us, and spent $80 on it, so I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to take it back… PICK ME!!!

  14. Amy says:

    I Facebooked it… Puhleeeease pick me!!! :-)

  15. Tami says:

We also need a gate between our living room and kitchen! With the new one coming soon I’d love to have a way to keep the kids safe in the living room, especially while I”m cooking!

  16. Tami says:

I posted the giveaway on Facebook!

  17. catherine says:

I would love this to keep the kids contained and away from the steps.

  18. Alea says:

I would use it across the entry to our large foyer to keep my toddler from wandering at night (he is s sleep wlaker). Right now we use a smaller gate across his bedroom door, but then he can’t go to the bathroom with ut calling for someone to let him out.

  19. Alea says:

    I tweeted this post.

  20. Lanie says:

I have two large openings into my kitchen, so this would be a great help in blocking them off. Of course I have a little while before it’s needed, but it never hurts to plan ahead!

  21. Kristen says:

I don’t have any steps, but it can be difficult to keep her in 1 room. I would use this to block the entrance to the kitchen.

  22. Lanie says:

    I just posted on Facebook!

  23. Jessica A. says:

I would use it betwee the livingroom and kitchen as well. I try and keep out little monster outbut she likes to follow me around and she is pretty quick now!

  24. Whitney says:

How fun to have this great baby gate! My first is due soon and this will be perfect when she starts crawling to keep her out of our kitchen too!

  25. Marj M. says:

My granddaughter needs a large gate between the kitchen and dining area. Too many bad things to get hurt with in the kitchen for my great granddaughter.

  26. […] This post was mentioned on Twitter by triciacallahan and Alea, mandi. mandi said: RT @onceamonthmom: Need to cage, I mean, gate your kids in? I've got a great #giveaway going on – http://bit.ly/98PCQz […]

  27. I would either put it at the top of the stairs, so I could stop getting up five times a night to make sure she hasn’t fallen down them, or in front of the laundry room, thereby blocking access to the kitty litter/sandbox.

  28. Kelly says:

I would use it to separate the living room and kitchen. I’ve also been unable to find one large enough. Thanks so much!

  29. Lindsey says:

I would use this gate at the top of our stairs. I’m always worried about my son toppling down the stairs!

  30. Monica says:

WOW! This gate sounds fantastic. We just had our 4th child, a girl. Her older brothers are 5, 7, 8 and on the go and she wants to be too…It would be great to keep her out of the kitchen, laundry and access to the garage since they don’t always pay attention to were she is. It would also keep the crazy dogs out of the kitchen!:)

  31. Celia says:

I would love to gate off the kitchen so I could get the dishes done without being clung to by my 1 y.o.!!!

  32. Celia says:

    I tweeted it!

  33. amy says:

We have the SAME problem with our living room & kitchen – I would LOVE this to help keep the munchkins out while using the stove or oven and keep them safe…even moreso as we’re expecting the arrival of another one soon!

  34. Tiana says:

Our little one is just about to start crawling and we have stairs!! I would use this either on the bottom or top to avoid a tumble

  35. Erika says:

I would LOVE this gate! the opening between our kitchen and family room is 94 inches. I have a 2year old who has no fear and I’m always worried abuot him getting hurt in the kitchen, and I have another on the way. This gate would be a lifesaver!!!!

  36. Sophie says:

I would use this gate to keep my 16 month old from coming into the kitchen while I am busy in there. He loves to touch the things in the dishwasher when I have it open and he’s getting to the point where he is pulling the towels off of the oven handle and I’m scared that he will pull the oven down at any time now. Too dangerous! Thanks for the giveaway! Hope I win!

  37. Sophie says:

    I posted it on Facebook!

  38. Meg says:

SO excited about the length this gate can go!! I didn’t realize there were gates out there like this. I have a 102 inch opening that I need to block from my crawling baby boy, and instead of purchasing a huge blockade like bookcases, this gate would be perfect!

  39. Maria Perez says:

I would use it in my home daycare which I have done for 16 years. This one looks great because I am planning on moving my playroom into my living room and it would be great for that area. Crossing my fingers.

  40. Rachel C says:

This would be great to win for my son’s door when we move him out of his crib.

  41. Amy says:

I would love to have this for baby #2. I hated the gates that we were given for DD3 so much that I threw one of them away after she outgrew it. They were both a pain because I either had to step over the gate or remove it from the wall if I wanted to go into the other room.

  42. Sassy says:

I would use it to keep my Peke-A-Poo from our three cats!

  43. Sassy says:

    I tweeted about this giveaway.

  44. Sassy says:

I also shared this on Facebook.

  45. I’d put it across the opening to our piano room/office/library. Too many exciting things for our daughter to get into! :)

  46. Erin says:

I would love to be able to block off my office corner from the rest of the living room. My 11 month old loves to “type”.

  47. Erin says:

I’ve also subscribed to this blog!

  48. Jacqueline says:

I also have a large opening between my kitchen and living room. I just had my third child and would warmly welcome such a helpful piece of safety equipment. Thank you for the opportunity to win one.

  49. Jacqueline says:

    Shared on facebook!

  50. Christy says:

Would love to win this! Our baby gate is old and has been through a couple of kids, and my littlest one right now is into everything! :)

  51. Betsy says:

We are moving to a new house this weekend with beautiful rock steps frm the back patio down to the backyard. I’m terrfied that my 18 month old son will tumble down those steps. This sounds like a great solution to ease my fears and provide hm some safety! Neat product!

  52. Jill Pierce says:

I would you this gate to block the large entrance we have into our dining room which leads to our kitchen. My daughter just turned one year old on Wednesday.

  53. Yeeeeeeessssssss! Our kitchen has an opening 63″ wide. My 18-month old daughter is into EVERYTHING! Climb up on the kitchen chairs then table-check! Play in dog food and water-check! Open screen door and hang out on the back stairs-check! Open pantry and help herself to a box of Elmo Crackers-check!

  54. We have a Summer Bouncy Seat that she LOVED as a baby and now we are trying out the Summer potty which I love because it converts to a seat to use on the big potty and a stool!

  55. Heather says:

I would love this!!! I too have a larger opening between my kitchen and dining room. I have a 14 month old who loves to get into everything and I am always nervous about him getting the oven open.

  56. Jennifer says:

We have a staircase whose banister has delicate spindles and curves around at the end. There is just no good way to mount a baby gate on it without damaging the beautiful wood rail. However, if I had a Summer Infant Custom Fit gate, I could put it across the expanse between the hall and the living room, effectively cutting baby off from the stairs AND the front door.

  57. I would LOVE to have one of these since I live in a loft with NO doors! Everything is open and there really isn’t a place to put a traditional baby gate.

  58. Tracy says:

I would use it to keep my 2 yr old out of the kitchen while I’m cooking. So needed!

  59. Jen says:

I’d use it to block off the stair which have a really long, round bottom…Kid C is just starting to crawl and I’m not ready to teach him stairs yet!

  60. Jen says:

    I’m a FB fan too!

  61. Jen says:

and I subscribe to your feed…and love it!

  62. Amanda says:

Wow, that is so great that the gate can extend that far!!! It would work well in any of the large openings between rooms in our house….living/dinning area, kitchen.

  63. esther says:

My daughter needs to have the family room for herself!

  64. esther says:

I don’t think I own any Summer products.

  65. Jana says:

We moved into our house a year ago, and I just found out I’m expecting another baby in February! I haven’t even CONSIDERED childproofing until I read this post and realized my open kitchen will need an extra large gate.

  72. Kelli says:

This would be perfect for the place where our kitchen, living room, and dining room intersect! Such a wide and awkward space to fit a gate.

  73. Kelli says:

We recently purchased a new Summers Infant changing pad for baby #2. Our first one was used and abused when it went everywhere with our son.

  74. Kelli says:

I became a fan on facebook.

  75. RG says:

I would use this to keep the baby in the house (back door) while I put clothes on the line in rainy weather.

  77. Amanda says:

I don’t have any of their products but the gate would come in handy for my sister-in-law!

  82. Heather says:

I would use this in the opening from our living room to the front door.
My 3 year old son has figured out how to unlock the door and open it and once went outside without me (and took his year old sister with him).
Luckily he doesn’t climb over gates so I think this would help.

  83. Cassie says:

We have the same problem with our kitchen-living room area. Our little one is about to be mobile and I worry about him falling in the kitchen with the hard ceramic tile. This gate is exactly what we’ve been looking for!

  84. Cassie says:

    I am already a FB fan. :)

  85. Cassie says:

We have the Summer Infant changing pad.

  86. Melissa says:

I would use the baby gate to keep my little girl out her big sister’s bedroom.

  87. Nichole says:

I would love this gate! We have an addition on our house that is not even with the rest of the house so there are steps to get to it. It is a huge opening, so this gate would be perfect to keep our little one safe when she becomes mobile soon!!

  88. Jen says:

We have one of theseand we love it also!!! But with my husband laid off we are having to get a small house. The problem is we need 2 gates! so we can interlock them since we rent we cant secure it to wall =( We dont have money right now to get a second one.

  89. Jami Lynn says:

I would love love love to win this! I have been searching for an extra-wide gate with no luck. We remodeled our house, and created an open floor plan, not expecting our third lil’ one. It would be great to use this between our living room and dining room/kitchen which has an opening of 112 inches!!!!

  90. Jami Lynn says:

    I’m a fan on fb :)

  91. Sunshine says:

To contain the kids and the new puppy :) We have a huge opening I haven’t been able to find a gate big enough to fit… until now :)

  94. Jennifer says:

I have been looking for a gate just like this, to keep my toddler safe between the kitchen and living room. Like you, she’s into everything and we have a wide opening so it takes a much larger gate. We are really tight financially, so up to this point, a cardboard box shoved between the stove and refridgerator has been our primary method of keeping her our of the kitchen, but it’s not terribly effective and is a pain coming and going.

  95. Jennifer says:

We also already have a summer gate to fit a smaller doorway in the house and we love their products!

  96. Katie says:

We are moving to a new house with a very WIDE staircase…looks like this gate will fit the bill!

  97. charity says:

With 3 little boys it is so difficult to keep my youngest out of places where he shouldn’t be (he thinks he is as old as his brothers, of course). This would be great and easy for my older two to do. I would put it in our hallway between the kitchen and the living room.

  98. Ashley says:

We have large openings in our house an elongated gate would be awesome!

  99. Ashley says:

    I’m a facebook fan

  100. Leah says:

I’ve tried so many different baby gates with varied success. We have a rather open floor plan in rather small house. I’d love to find a solution like this that works! Please, pick me!

  101. Christy says:

If I won, I would use the gate to block off my kitchen from the dining room. On a layout standpoint in our house they are all the same room and it sure would be nice to keep the little ones out from under foot while working with hot food and sharp knives!

  102. Christy says:

We also have a Summer gate that we use to block off the laundry room. I love it ’cause it’s taller and it’s a walk-through.

  103. Christy says:

I’m a fan of OAMM on FB

  104. Tiffany K says:

I am a fan of Once A Month Mom on facebook! I would LOVE to have a gate like this for my grabby wicked fast 8 month old that is right on the cusp of walking! He’s too advanced for his age & mega strong! We have a huge expance between the living room & kitchen! What a nightmare! Need a strong & LONG gate just like this Summer Infant Sure & Secure Custom Fit Gate!!!! We have had other Summer Infant products & so it’s a brand we trust & love! With a 8 month old son & a 7 year old son both living under our roof of our mobile home whis would also help us to keep the baby area safer especially to keep him away from his big brothers legos & small toys! It’s a contant worry that my baby will choke on any of those small parts! Thanks for giving YOUR feedback on this Summer Infant Sure & Secure Custom Fit Gate & posting this giveaway too!

I bought this gate several years ago when we had an open dining room that led into the living room. We used it to blog off the dining/kitchen area from my toddler. It worked fantastic and even my 4 year old was able to open and close the gate.

*Gasp* Nobody told me they made huge baby gates like this!! I have a similar issue between kitchen and a formal living room that I’d love to block off with gates, but simply can’t because I didn’t know something like this existed.

  111. Quirky Jessi says:

I don’t have any other Summer Infant items in my home. This would be a first for me. :D

I have the summer infant bath sling and loved it until my little guy outgrew it. Now he is 13 months and walking and my 3 year old is teaching him the ins and outs of the house! I have one son going one way and my other son going the other way. I have a large opening between the kitchen and dinning area and nothing to block it off. He is always in the kitchen hanging off of my leg while I cook and I desperately need a way to keep him from coming in the kitchen. Money is tight so I am prioritizing which opening gets a gate first since I also need to buy one for the top of the stairs and one for our down stairs hallway the leads to the steps. Gosh so many escape routes that need to be blocked!!
