Make It Now Cooking Directions
These directions are for cooking this recipe to serve immediately and NOT to freeze for later.
- Melt butter in a saute pan over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened, stirring occasionally (about 5 min.).
- Reduce heat to low and continue cooking onions until browned and caramelized 25-30 minutes). Stir occasionally.
- Meanwhile, begin cooking bratwurst according to package instructions. (Bratwurst is not a smoked sausage, so make sure to cook it all the way through. You can boil them in water or beer and then pan fry or grill to give them a nice crispy outside.)
- Place potatoes and apples in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer until fork tender (15-20 min.)
- Drain potatoes and apples and return to a large mixing bowl. Mash with a potato masher. Add salt, pepper, nutmeg, milk, and butter #1 and mash again until you reach the desired consistency.
- Serve along side bratwurst and top with caramelized onions.
