Meet Jessica @ Simply Healthy Home

OAMM blog partner Jessica writes at Simply Healthy Home (and contributes at a few other blogs), sharing her experience and recipes in her journey to whole foods and health.

Blogging allows her to stay home with her two little boys, who were the beginning of her desire to research and pursue healthy eating and natural health options. Even though she grew up with fast food, she has taught herself and her family to eat wholesome foods, and continues to fight for wellness even though she has recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease. We love her recipes and have used them on many of our menus including Allergen, Trim Healthy Mama Compliant, and Whole Foods.

How long have you been blogging about food?

I have been blogging about food for about two years.

Have you always loved cooking, or was it a skill that you learned to love? Who taught you to cook?

I have always enjoyed cooking. I love making food that makes people smile.  My mom taught me how to cook but my skills have evolved quite a bit since then.

What is your favorite meal to serve to family and friends? What is your favorite treat to make for yourself?

I think my favorite meal to serve to people is spaghetti and sauce. I make my sauce from scratch using my home canned tomatoes so it’s fun to share that with others. Mt kids are very much a part of my kitchen and help me can, so they take pride in telling everyone how they canned the tomatoes.

My favorite treat at the moment is just a tray of tortilla chips with cheese melted in the oven. I love to have it with homemade salsa and guacamole.

What is your favorite kitchen tool or gadget? Tell us a little about how you fell in love with it and how you use it in your kitchen.

Just one tool?? I would honestly have to say my favorite is a good, sharp knife. I used to totally hate chopping things until I learned about keeping my knives sharp. It really makes such a difference in prep time.

When you are meal planning or looking for new recipes, what kind of guidelines do you follow for choosing them? Or what inspires you in the kitchen?

When looking for new recipes I look for a base of ingredients that I normally keep in house. I like to look for different flavor combinations or different methods other than my own. But, I have a horrible habit of never leaving a recipe alone, I almost always have to add my own twist. 😉

Inspiration comes in many forms for me, but it really is just about finding something I know my family will enjoy.

What items are ALWAYS on your grocery list? What items will you NEVER put on your grocery list?

I totally cannot cook with onions, garlic and butter. They are the base to just about anything in my kitchen.

Franken foods are not on my list. I try to make things for scratch with real food.

Tell us the best kitchen tip or trick that you’ve ever discovered.

Freezing food has been my best kitchen trick. I make HUGE batches of soups, sauces and stews and freeze  them. They make for quick lunches or dinner on a busy day.

What do you like to do when you aren’t cooking or blogging?

I love spending time with my family, pretty much doing whatever they like. I also love to curl up with a good book and a cup of coffee.

Have you ever freezer cooked? Share some of your favorite recipes or tips.

I have frozen just about any kind of soup and sauce. Spinach Lasagna Soup is one of my favorites!
