Meet Katrina @ Katrina Runs for Food

OAMM blog partner, Katrina, is an athlete and a foodie who hasn’t let her heath issues get in the way of enjoying either.

How long have you been blogging about food?

Almost 5 years.

Have you always loved cooking, or was it a skill that you learned to love? Who taught you to cook?

My grandmother taught me to cook from an early age. My mother worked long hours and I gradually took on more of the cooking because I truly loved creating dishes in the kitchen.

What is your favorite meal to serve to family and friends? What is your favorite treat to make for yourself?

My favorite would have to be roasted beef tenderloin with vegetables in a balsamic reduction. My treat for myself is a gluten-free version of Cranberry Bliss Bars (freezable – log in required).

What is your favorite kitchen tool or gadget? Tell us a little about how you fell in love with it and how you use it in your kitchen.

Garlic press and microplane. I can’t separate them. For years, I used the garlic salt to flavor food. Once I learned just how amazing real garlic can be, I was hooked on a garlic press. The microplane replaced about 7 different gadgets and is used almost daily in my kitchen.

When you are meal planning or looking for new recipes, what kind of guidelines do you follow for choosing them? Or what inspires you in the kitchen?

I look for creative twists on current favorites. I stick closely to the Paleo lifestyle, so we eat a lot of meat and vegetables. It is easy to get stuck in a rut with those. I look for seasonal recipes that bring the basics to a new level. I also look for recipes that will allow me to branch out from the “easy.” I like new challenges. Just not during August or May. Those months are off limits for this teacher!

What items are ALWAYS on your grocery list? What items will you NEVER put on your grocery list?

Always have garlic, butter, and beef. I Never have raw seafood/sushi/escargot/caviar, etc. That’s just not my thing.

Tell us the best kitchen tip or trick that you’ve ever discovered.

Lay a wooden spoon over a boiling pot. It will not boil over.

What do you like to do when you aren’t cooking or blogging?

Running, photography, reading.

Have you ever freezer cooked? Share some of your favorite recipes or tips.

I do a weekend meal prep for the week. I usually have soup or stew left over and will divide those into lunch servings to freeze.
