Caramel Apple Pie Trifle

If you were at the Tweet-Up you know that this dessert is to die for! If you weren’t at the Tweet-Up you probably wish you were, if for nothing else to have yourself one little bite of this scrumptious dish! It just says fall. Warmth. Eat me! Really, you need to try this. And if you wanted to be the new “talk of the town” (in a good way) take it to public gathering and let others partake! This recipe uses the Freezer Apple Pie Kits. This is a great variation on using the kits if you aren’t interested in making an apple pie.

Ingredients:

2 Pie Crusts (recommended recipe – Foolproof Pie Crust)

2 gallon bags Freezer Apple Pie Kits

1.5 cups Milk

8 ounces Whipped Topping, thawed

2 ounces Instant Vanilla Pudding

20 ounces Caramel Topping

.5 cup Sugar

1 tablespoon Cinnamon

Directions:

First Layer-Pie Crust Rolls – Use the homemade pie crust recipe below, using 3 of the pie crusts  to make approximately 72 balls of pie dough, approximately ½” in diameter.  Roll half of the pie dough balls into a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.  Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees.  Allow to cool.   Second Layer-Pie Filling – Use 2 freezer apple pie kits-pour each one into a casserole type dish.  If using stoneware, microwave uncovered for 8-9 minutes if apples are not frozen.  If apples are frozen, microwave approximately 20 minutes.  If using oven, bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30-40 minutes. Allow to cool before assembling trifle. Third Layer-Pudding Mixture – Mix vanilla pudding and milk according to package directions. Fold in whipped topping and 17 oz of caramel. To create trifle – Use half of the pie dough balls to form a layer on the bottom of the trifle.  Pour 1 bag of cooked apples over the pie dough (apples should be cooled).  Pour half of the pudding mixture on top.  Repeat all 3 layers using the remaining ingredients.  Use remaining caramel to drizzle over the top.  Enjoy! (Side note: You can also simplify this recipe by using refrigerated pie crusts. You can either create dough balls or simply cook the dough on a cookie sheet and use a pizza cutter to make “squares” out of the dough.)

Freezing Directions:

Not recommended for freezing. However, you can make all elements ahead of time and store in refrigerator until ready to assemble.
