Join the discussionMade this for six people twice. Both times it gave me a burn reading on the IP. But since most of the cooking is done as the natural release is happening, it still cooked through. The recipe as written has a bit too much pepper in it. I’m from New Orleans, and I like spice, but the IP really draws out the heat from the black pepper so it ends up just shy of kids-won’t-eat-it. It also had too much rice compared to meat in it. I’d cut the pepper in half and cut the rice in half as well. Delicious dish.
Burn reading for me too with my IP. I added a cup of water, still got the burn, added a 2nd cup of water, still burned. Agreed that there’s too much pepper – fresh pepper + IP = Pepper! 🙂
I really really want to love this recipe. Hubby loves it! The flavor is good but I will need to play with the ratios of rice to meat.
Hi Becky, we’ve decreased the pepper due to the complaints – hope that helps! This recipe has 4 servings and uses 3 cups of water. That should be plenty to avoid the burn notice. The other comment was made using more than the suggested 4 servings. How many servings were you using? Another change we made was in the way the ingredients were added on serving day- having the water first. That should resolve the problem. Please reach out if you have continued problems.
I’ve tried this recipe for a couple of months, and I think I’ve finally got it right! In the freezer portion: Japanese 7 spice (about 2 tsp), and garlic salt (1-2 tsp).
On cook day, I made some tomato sauce from canned tomatoes and added basil, oregano, and parsley. I put 1 cup of that in place of one cup of water. I cooked it for 3 minutes, quick released and gave a quick stir to finish that rice on top.
This created a drier rice dish, but one loaded with flavor! My family likes the big bold flavors, so it may be a bit too much for some. But it made enough for my family to have seconds and me to take to work the next day!
I can’t seem to get this recipe right either. Made it twice and got a burn notice both times. I even tried adding the water first and put as much of the rice on top of the meat mixture. This one just doesn’t work for me
