Get Real 2012: Movie Week – Food Inc.

**This post is part of the Get Real series. Please remember that this is meant as a learning community. We know that many of you are passionate about what you do and we want you to express that, just please do so in a way that will be an encouragement and aid to others making a transition. We want this to be a “safe space” for participants to learn. For that reason, we reserve the right to delete any comments that are not handled in this manner.

Growing up in an agricultural community and being in local 4-H chapter helped me to understand where my food came from and the work it takes. However, my husband didn’t grow up in the same way. Therefore one of the most inspiring moments in the transition to whole and real foods for our family was watching the documentary Food, Inc. It opened our eyes to the world behind the packaging at the grocery store, what ingredients really are, a look into the health epidemic of our country and what really goes on with food regulation in the United States today.
I believe this film can help to start your education on where your food really comes from. You may live in an urban setting where farm scenes are what you see on television or limited to trips outside the city. You may live out in the country and see farm life on your daily drive, but do you really understand those cows or chickens aren’t what is in your grocery cart? Or small facts like less than 1% of the corn grown in the US is actually corn that you can eat right from the cob?
Can’t get your partner on board for the Get Real challenge? We say that you should whip up a batch of Lisa’s brown bag popcorn and cozy up to watch this film together. Although we can’t promise that it will change their mind instantly, we can assure you it will start up a conversation in your household and get the wheels turning! You can check your local library for a copy of this video, or you can stream it via Netflix or Amazon Prime.
