Make It Now Cooking Directions

These directions are for cooking this recipe to serve immediately and NOT to freeze for later.

  1. Combine pasta, lentils, peas, rice, and onion soup mix together.
  2. Place a large pot over campfire burned down to coal bed or campstove at medium high heat with vegetable oil (cast iron conducts and retains heat well).
  3. Add meat and brown on all sides, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add a small amount of broth and scrape to deglaze pan (remove brown crusty bits).
  5. Add remaining broth and diced tomatoes and bring to a boil.
  6. Add in pasta mixture and simmer covered for 30-45 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes or so to make sure it isn't burning on the bottom.

Freeze For Later Cooking Directions

These directions help you cook or prepare this meal PRIOR to being frozen for serving later (see Serving Day Directions when you are ready to prepare it to eat).

Why would I want to freeze this?

  1. Combine pasta, lentils, peas, rice, and onion soup mix together in a bowl. Divide among half of indicated number of quart freezer bags.
  2. Divide meat into other half of indicated number of quart freezer bags.
  3. Divide beef broth and tomatoes into indicated number of gallon freezer bags. Label and freeze all bags.
