Although these Sloppy Vegan Joes don't come out looking like your traditional sloppy joes, I assure you that they are every bit as good and almost as messy. Perfect for a meatless meal or for over Lent, this is a quick, easy meal that will greet you with its delicious smell as you walk in the door at the end of a long day.

  1. This was very good! My boyfriend liked it so much that he just ate it out of a bowl without bothering with the bun. He also thought it would be tasty as a lettuce wrap, so we will try that next time I make it. I couldn’t get all of it to fit in our crock pot at once, so I froze half for next time. We still had plenty of leftovers with two people.

I hadn’t tried this recipe yet because I was wondering how to serve it without a bun, (alas, baby weight–I’m 39 wks pregnant) but thanks to your Green Joes suggestion now it’s in my menu for this month. Just in time with an easy assembly crockpot recipe. Cheers Stephanie!

    1. There is marjoram but there is tons of flavor with the vinegar, mustard, ketchup, soy sauce etc. Try it and if you feel it still needs a kick you can add what you’d like!

  2. I didn’t add this recipe to my monthly menu, but I added two others that had TVP. Does TVP show up in the shopping lists? It doesn’t show up in mine.

  3. The rice and lentils should be cooked PRIOR to mixing and freezing everything together, correct? So does the recipe call for 2 cups of dry rice or 2 cups of cooked rice? Same for the lentils?

    1. The recipe calls for dry rice and dry lentils which do not need to be cooked prior to freezing. All of our recipes will specifically state “cooked” in the ingredient list if an ingredient needs to be cooked before proceeding with the recipe.

    1. It’s a high protein soy product that is often used as a meat substitute. It can be found in most standard grocery stores, often in the health foods section, (Bob’s Red Mill is one brand), but if you can’t find it you should be able to ask a grocery store employee to help you locate it!

  4. I feel like I did something wrong, we had our cooking day Saturday and wanted to try this recipe on Sunday. Well after 12 hours in the crockpot, adding two more cups of water and another batch of sauce ingredients…the brown rice was STILL crunchy! We eventually just had to pull it out of the Foodi and set it to cool so we could go to bed.

    I’m going to try it again, but I just don’t know where I went wrong? The flavor was good, but the texture of crunchy rice was very off putting. Can I substitute for the brown rice? Use different lentils? (I’ve never cooked with lentils and can get a wide variety, so it’s a whole new world of an ingredient!)

    The only change is that we like a spicier “joe” sauce so I added about 8 dashes of Tabasco to the whole pot. Makes it just a tiny bit zingy.

    1. Hi Jessica, we’re sorry to hear that this was a fail! You could definitely sub a different lentil or even just double the brown lentils. If you have an Instant Pot there is also an Instant Pot Version that may help the rice.

  5. Is it possible the Make It Now instructions should read “Cook on LOW 6-8 hours”? I am salvaging what I can, but it got burned quite badly.

    1. Hi Jessika,
      It is supposed to cook on High, however every slow cooker does vary. It could be that your slow cooker is running hot and that this recipe didn’t work for you on high. I would make a note and cook on low in your slow cooker next time. We haven’t had any other complaints about it. Keep an eye and if other recipes are over cooking then it might be time to get a new slow cooker- when it starts to run hot that’s typically a sign (but if it’s just this recipe then it’s probably just a one-time thing with this recipe). 🙂
