These directions are for cooking this recipe to serve immediately and NOT to freeze for later.

  1. In a stockpot, brown beef, sausage, and onion over medium heat.
  2. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, basil, garlic, oregano, parsley, and mushrooms. Bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for one hour.
  4. Remove from heat. Spoon a layer of sauce into a baking pan.
  5. Place a layer of noodles on top of sauce.
  6. Spread a layer of cottage cheese over noodles.
  7. Repeat spaghetti sauce, noodles, and cottage cheese one more time. Finish with a layer of spaghetti sauce.
  8. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the top.
  9. Place foil over lasagna and bake at 350F for 40 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake for 10 minutes longer, or until top is bubbly and brown.

  1. This recipe is missing the mozzarella instructions in the Freeze for Later recipe.

    Also – if you make this for 6 servings it tells you to use 4 – 8×8 pans but only 1 box of 12oz noodles. This is absolutely not enough as it cannot cover and do two layers for 4 pans like instructed. There is also not enough cottage cheese or mozzarella if you use the calculations for 6 servings.

    The sauce is a good base sauce, could use some salt to taste but definitely a great base sauce.

      For your pan size issue, for 6 servings this is a bit tricky. Our system automatically adjusts pan sizes for recipes like these and typically works well. However, due to the nature of this recipe, it isn’t fool proof for certain serving sizes.

      For 6 servings, we would recommend bumping up your serving size to 8 OR using 2 deeper 8×8 pans instead of 4 or 2 of a pan size between 9×13 and 8×8.
