It seems like fruit options are slim pickings in the winter months. But if you’ve shopped the perimeter of your grocery store lately, you may have noticed that there actually are a few inexpensive seasonal fruit and vegetable options available. If you’re trying to eat healthier this year, try a few of these citrus fruits and crunchy vegetables this February to keep money in your wallet and fat away from your waistline.
Grapefruit, Oranges, and Tangelos
Grapefruit, oranges, and tangelos are a fantastic way to eat some fiber and curb a sweet tooth. When you eat citrus at it’s peak, it’s more sweet than tart so you can have a few slices to curb that afternoon slump. Or, if you want to give yourself a treat after dinner, add fruit slices to sugar-free Jello and top with a dollop of whipped cream!
Lemons
If you’ve been guzzling water like crazy, you may find yourself wanting to spruce up your drink every once in a while. Adding a few lemon wedges to your water will give it a little pizzazz and help you get in those recommended 64 ounces a day!
Papayas
Papayas have a ton of nutrients so they are a fantastic way to spruce up your snack time this month. They are least expensive in the U.S. during the winter months so make sure you try a few in February. Next month the price will go up so get them cheap while you can.
Broccoli and Cauliflower
We talked last month about pairing broccoli and cauliflower with hummus. Of course there are many other dips you can use including ranch dressing and sour cream. When eaten raw, both broccoli and cauliflower are extremely filling and low-calorie. It’s a snackers dream come true! If you have yummy snack ideas to to share, leave them in the comments or link up a recipe here.
