Empowering Change: Let’s Talk About #LetThemEatCereal Movement and Homemade Alternatives

Introduction: A Movement for Change

A movement has begun. A movement of the people. To be seen. To be heard. To choose to stop being marginalized and placated and overlooked.

Challenging Kellogg’s: The Call to Action

In a recent televised interview, the CEO of Kellogg’s, Gary Pilnick’s suggested that consumers who are struggling financially to meet basic food needs, should consider cereal as a dinner alternative. All while recently also boasting of recent increases in profit margins of +28% during the same period consumers have been struggling to make ends meet as food prices overall have increased 26%.

Understanding #LetThemEatCereal Movement

When TallGirl6234 first posted the idea of stopping purchases and use of all Kellogg’s owned brands starting April 1, 2024, I not only loved the idea; I appreciated the care, concern and actionable items that were laid out. Most notable among them were:

  • This DOES NOT apply to people who’s safe foods are these brands. (As a mama with sensory kiddos this was so great to hear).
  • That there wasn’t going to be a toxic rhetoric or storyline perpetuated or food shaming those that normally do consume these products.
  • That there wasn’t protesting or hateful speech being implored.

Taking Action: The Movement’s Premise

  • Spend the month of March doing research into what companies Kellogg’s owns and assess which of those products you purchase.
  • Find alternatives for those products by April 1.
  • Starting April 1, 2024 for 3 months, don’t purchase any of these Kellogg’s produced products. (You are welcome to start sooner if you want.)

Empowering Change: Homemade Kellogg’s Alternatives

It is a simple movement, with simple, yet actionable steps that when mobilized by thousands, and hopefully millions of people, can have a larger impact on the whole. To make a difference for us all in driving down the prices at the grocery store.

DIY Solutions: Making Homemade Alternatives

Not only do I believe in the “why” of the movement, at OAMM, we have always believed in making many of these products at home. That you can make them quickly, easily and at a much lower cost, controlling the ingredients AND making them healthier without the preservatives at home. We are ALWAYS in support of empowering you to make meals at home instead of buying the manufactured versions.

Better Than the Freezer Aisle: Tried and True Recipes

In fact, many of the products that are produced by Kellogg’s are products that we have done a Better than the Freezer Aisle series on in the past. So this list of recipes you can substitute for your favorite Kellogg’s products was already done. These are TRIED AND TRUE recipes that our members have loved.

Meal Planning for Change: Join the Movement Today

And what is better, you can either click through and make them now OR you can create a whole meal plan of them (along with other meals) to make ahead and freeze – we will do all the organizing for you, by allowing you to scale to the number of servings that you need and giving you a grocery list, prep sheets, step-by-step assembly instructions, scaled recipe cards, a thaw sheet, and labels for your customized meal plan.
