Winter Peak Produce Picks

We don’t often think of winter as having a lot to offer produce wise. With modern farming methods and transportation, you can have a tomato in January, but why? And of course you can always rely on the freezer aisle or your own frozen produce from the summer months. But, did you know that winter has its own unique produce offerings? Cool weather crops like cruciferous vegetables and citrus are packed with nutrients to get you through the cold and flu season. Nature provides us with exactly what we need when we need it. Eating a fragrant orange is like a ray of sunshine on a cold winter day, so fill your grocery cart with them instead of mushy, white hothouse tomatoes. Also note that some of our fall produce such as greens (kale, spinach, etc.), and sweet potato continue to be in season through the winter as well. Check out recipes for them on our Fall list.
